Day 71 : The John Muir Trail

29th June 2013
The Devil's Postpile to Thousand Island Lake
Mileage : 0 + 15
Today i hiked north on the JMT as opposed to the PCT. The JMT is named after John Muir, a Scot who was one of the first white men to have explored the Sierra Nevada in the late 19th century and who was instrumental in establishing and protecting Yosemite National Park. Although roughly the same distance, the JMT climbs about 3000ft more than the PCT before the two meet up again, and that took its toll on me, especially given the 7 days worth of food i was carrying. Towards the end of the day however, i, along with Starfox, with whom i had been hiking most of the day reached the day's objective : Thousand Island Lake.
I don't know if there are as many islands as its name would have you believe, but there were certainly more than i could shake a hiking pole at. The two of us lounged like lizards in the late afternoon sun while waiting for Chick-Chack before heading across to the other side of the lake to make camp. It had been a good day, and i was looking forward to the days ahead.

Bug nets at the ready, we set off around the lake to camp at the bottom of the snow field
